About the Department

The Hacherl Research & Writing Studio, situated within the Teaching & Learning Division of Western Libraries, connects students to resources that support research, reading, and writing across all subjects. Studio programs strive to enhance student agency to manage their own learning through the development and improvement of academic research, writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills. The Studio provides distinct and dedicated support for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Graduate services within the Hacherl Research & Writing Studio offer graduate-level support for graduate-level needs. Graduate assistants with a background in peer-to-peer support for research and writing are available to help with class assignments like masters’ theses, projects, and capstones.

About the Position

The Western Libraries Graduate Research & Writing Program Specialist (Grad Specialist) is a member of the Hacherl Research & Writing Studio Leadership Team. With direction from the Head of Studio, the primary responsibilities for the Grad Specialist are to support the daily Studio operations for graduate student learning.

Typical duties include: 

  • Support and mentor Graduate Studio Assistants in the development, maintenance, and implementation of face-to-face and online curricular-embedded and co-curricular curriculum and learning resources
  • Onboard Graduate Studio Assistants and ensure continuity of research and writing services and support for graduate students
  • Co-create inclusive and just professional development opportunities for Graduate Studio Assistants in support of their consulting practices
  • Facilitate co-curricular instructional activities focused on research, reading, writing, speaking, and listening
  • Provide advisement regarding modifying, expanding, or sunsetting programmatic services based on evaluation and assessment efforts
Required Qualifications
  • Masters degree OR Bachelors with 4 years of academic support experience in a post-secondary institution
  • Cultural competence to communicate and collaborate effectively with people of diverse social identities and backgrounds
  • At least one year of experience in providing support for academic literacies, such as reading, writing, and researching in a post-secondary setting
  • Evidence of excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across a variety of staffing roles and statuses
  • Competency in basic productivity software (eg. Microsoft Suite and Google Drive)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrate understanding of effective and efficient evaluation and assessment concepts and practices related to program development
  • Experience designing inclusive and accessible curricula for in-person and online delivery
  • Master’s or other advanced degree in education, student services, human services, writing, composition, TESOL, library and information science/studies, or similar field

Salary The pay range for this position is $3,701- $4,855 per month, commensurate with experience; Includes an excellent benefits package.
Bargaining Unit This position is part of bargaining unit PT and is covered by the collective bargaining agreement with Public School Employees of WWU.
