About the Position

The Senior System Administrator serves as lead for the technical support group for the Computer Science Department, which is comprised of multiple system administrators and a varied amount of student employees. This role is responsible for achieving the technical needs of the Computer Science Department. They are also the team supervisor for the Computer Science Department’s technical support group, including activities such as employer managerial functions, interfacing with the department to determine needs, and assisting in planning the environment's evolution.

Typical duties include:

  • Serves as team lead and supervisor for the technical support group comprised of multiple system administrators and some varied amount of student employees, including supervisory tasks such as leave approvals, performance evaluations, leading weekly meetings, organizing and prioritizing work tasks, and performing duties during absences;
  • Ensure performance of the network environment and systems by deploying and maintaining network hardware using knowledge of the practical applications of the OSI and TCP/IP models;
  • Conduct operating system diagnostics while leveraging system tracing tools, monitoring resource usage, and performing log analysis to identify and resolve problems independently or in consultation with other technical staff for analysis when needed;
  • Select and procure hardware, software, and other infrastructure needs, working with vendors as needed to resolve problems and monitor service agreements;
  • Independently, or in consultation with others, design, implement, and maintain both logical and physical computing environments, including but not limited to user-facing and backend services, system mappings (UID/GID, DHCP, DNS, etc.), network infrastructure, and other complex deployments spanning multiple operating systems;
  • Principal developer for custom client and server applications using multiple programming languages such as Python, Perl, and C as well as the ability to write scripts in UNIX shell and Microsoft PowerShell, including the responsibility for writing code and ensuring tools and scripts are written clearly, documented, and tracked in a version control system such as git;
  • Build custom virtual machines and other IT environments to support specific curricular needs across multiple disciplines within the field of Computer Science;
Required Qualifications
  • BS in Computer Science or closely related field;
  • At least 3 years of technical experience;
  • At least 2 years of experience in a technical or team lead capacity;
  • Knowledge and at least 2 years programming and configuration experience in Windows and Unix;
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to cultivate team and/or learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of individuals with diverse social identities and backgrounds;
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at building trust, maintaining positive working relationships with stakeholders, and developing employee engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
  • Experience with distributed file systems
  • Experience with and or certifications in operating systems, networks, and security
  • Experience in and knowledge of web-based and cloud technologies
  • Experience working in or with an educational community
  • Experience working with a diverse population.

Salary Starting salary range is $84,307- $99,524, commensurate with experience; includes an excellent benefits package
