About the University

Western Washington University sits on the traditional homelands of the Lummi and Nooksack peoples and occupies part of the larger Coast and Straits Salish territories that expand from Puget Sound to Desolation Sound, along the Straits of Georgia and Juan de Fuca, and adjoining saltwater and river watershed systems in the transboundary Salish Sea. 

Western Washington University has an enrollment of approximately 16,000 students in seven colleges and the graduate school, and is nationally recognized for its educational programs, students, and faculty.  The university is located in Bellingham, Washington, a coastal community of 90,000 overlooking Bellingham Bay, the San Juan Islands and the North Cascades Mountain range. The city lies 90 miles north of Seattle and 60 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia. Western is the highest-ranking public, master's-granting university in the Pacific Northwest, according to the 2022 U.S. News & World Report rankings.

As its mission, Woodring facilitates learning that prepares and advances quality educators and human services professionals throughout their careers. The College vision is to foster community relationships and a culture of learning that advances knowledge, embraces diversity, and promotes social justice, which serves as a guide for program development, partnerships with schools and communities, and college initiatives. The mission and vision are fulfilled through the successful collaborative efforts of creative and energetic faculty, staff, and students to meaningfully address societal challenges.  

Woodring College of Education is comprised of an engaged community of 50+ tenured/tenure-track faculty, 100+ non-tenure track faculty, and approximately 40 staff members in four departments (Elementary Education, Health and Community Studies, Secondary Education, and Special Education and Education Leadership), several outreach program sites, and several related centers. The College is a nationally recognized leader in the development and implementation of programs that prepare outstanding early childhood, elementary, secondary, and special education teachers as well as adult educators, educational administration leaders, human services professionals, nurses, and rehabilitation counselors. The College has been a leader in diversity-related and social justice initiatives and values its history of shared governance and strong student activism. The College houses a number of important centers and programs such as CEED (Center for Education, Equity and Diversity), E-ATRC (Ershig Assistive Technology Resource Center), the Education and Social Justice Minor, the Pacific Northwest Children’s Literature Clearinghouse, the Palliative Care Institute, and the Tribal Vocational Rehabilitation Institute, a partnership with Northwest Indian College.  The Diversity Recruitment and Retention (DRR) Office also supports the Woodring College of Education in its commitment to fostering a culture of learning that advances knowledge, embraces diversity, and promotes social justice.

About the Position

Western Washington University (Western) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Woodring College of Education. Western seeks a Dean who fosters innovation, scholarship, collegiality, inclusiveness, and diversity. The Dean is the chief visionary of the College as well as its academic and administrative leader, providing strategic direction in an environment that is founded in faculty governance and leadership.  

As a key member of the university's central executive leadership team, the Dean works with other executive leaders and the faculty in a collaborative collective bargaining environment to implement the university's mission. The Dean is an active, collaborative, and visible leader within both the university and greater community. Outreach and advocacy are critical parts of this role. 

In conjunction with the department chairs and directors, as well as the various College committees and councils, the Dean creates and implements short-term and long-term strategic goals consistent with the Woodring College of Education's mission and vision. The Dean reports to the Provost and works closely with the Deans of Western's six other colleges and the graduate school. It is anticipated that the Dean will assume office on August 1, 2022.  

The Dean is expected to be a leader who inspires others and fosters innovation and inclusiveness in a local, national, global, and digital society. The Dean provides academic leadership and is responsible for strategic planning, for budget, resource, and operations management, for program development and assessment, and for external accreditations. The Dean oversees faculty appointments, development, and evaluation, including tenure and promotion. The Dean is expected to embrace the values of a student-centered, collaborative college, responsive to evolving societal challenges and Western's model of shared faculty governance and collective bargaining.  

The Dean fulfills leadership responsibilities in ways that support an equitable and inclusive learning and work environment for students, faculty, and staff. The Dean collaborates with faculty, staff, and students to develop and implement the mission, vision, and strategic plans for the college and university. The Dean serves as an advocate for Western and for the Woodring College of Education, including the development and support of partnership opportunities in the local, national and international community. The Dean is instrumental in advancing alumni relations and development efforts, and specifically is responsible for fundraising in support of Woodring's initiatives. 

Required Qualifications
  • An earned Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree and academic credentials that qualify for appointment as a full professor with tenure in Woodring College of Education
  • Demonstrated commitment to accessibility, diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism, as well as a record that demonstrates success in enhancing these principles
  • Demonstrated commitment to and skills in cultivating working and learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of individuals with diverse social identities and backgrounds
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in teacher education or health and community studies
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in collaborative decision-making and shared governance along with the ability to advocate for faculty, staff, and students
  • Demonstrated success in managing a complex higher education environment, including personnel, fiscal and budgetary management, organizational stewardship, and resource management
  • Demonstrated success in collaborative strategic planning and its implementation in a university setting
  • Demonstrated experience in building community partnerships and forming effective collaborations with external organizations, including state educational organizations
  • Demonstrated capacity to build internal relationships and visibility of the college within the University
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated leadership as an effective administrator equivalent with department chair level or above
  • Demonstrated record of engaged partnership with Tribal Nations/Indigenous Communities
  • Demonstrated experience with/capacity for generating resources, fundraising, and working with external constituents, including alumni, donors, and foundations
  • Demonstrated experience with external program approval or accreditation
  • Demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary programs and curricula and commitment to fostering collaboration across departments and colleges
  • Demonstrated success working with education policy makers, external agencies, P-12 schools and/or community-based organizations serving children, youth, or adults
  • Demonstrated engagement with Latinx teachers, students, and families in schools and communities
  • Demonstrated engagement with the regional multilingual communities
  • Demonstrated experience with productive, collaborative relations in a collective bargaining setting

Salary This is a full-time, 12-month administrative position with an excellent benefits package. Salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience.
