Position Title Carpenter

About the Position

Our carpenters work in an independent manner as a journey-level carpenter and within small teams, taking direction from supervisor and lead. Position must be able to perform carpenter functions, maintaining and renovating the university facilities. Duties include: 

  • Frame walls, ceilings, and doors using wood and metal material.
  • Fabricate and install new cabinetry and alter existing cabinetry, fixtures, and furniture using a variety of materials (plywood, melamine, dimension lumber, etc.)
  • Install wall coverings such as brick, stone, waterproof panels (FRP).
  • Patch, form, and pour concrete for stairs, slabs, and walls.
  • Install and repair plastic laminates and solid surfacing material (Corian).
  • Fabricate and install doors and door hardware.
  • Repair and replace glazing in a variety of window and door applications.
  • Fabricate and install bulletin boards, white boards, black boards, shelving, etc. on a variety of walls (concrete, masonry, GWB, metal).
  • Install acoustical treatment, ceiling tile, and suspended ceilings.
Required Qualifications
  • Four years of full-time experience working at journey level in the carpentry field obtained in a commercial or institutional environment (journey level achieved after 4 years at the apprentice level) to include:
    • Installation and fabrication of doors and door hardware in institutional and commercial applications (door closers, door operators, panic hardware, locksets, etc.)
    • Framing of walls, ceilings, doors, etc., using wood and metal material
    • Installation of a variety of wall coverings including gypsum wallboard and plaster.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints (detail sketches), plans, and building specifications. Ability to perform accurate material take-off, help with estimating projects, and assist in field design work (shop drawings).
  • Experienced in the use of applicable hand tools and operation of power equipment such as saws, jointers, sanders, planers, and boring and mortising machines. Ability to clean, sharpen, maintain, and repair such tools and equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to provide a positive image and a friendly and cooperative manner with students, staff and faculty at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong communication skills, including written and verbal.
  • Manage time well and work under pressure situations with tight schedules and deadlines to complete projects.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require use of respirators, such as but limited to particulate and half face cartridge. Must meet requirements for fit test to allow the wearing of such respirators to perform assigned tasks.
  • Physically able to perform all job functions.
  • High school graduation diploma OR graduation equivalency diploma (GED) certificate.
  • Valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to starting work.
  • Ability to drive service truck as required, and load and unload materials and supplies.
  • Obtain Asbestos Worker certificate within 1 year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong applicable knowledge of the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) regulations to perform assigned tasks.

Bargaining Unit This position is part of bargaining unit B and is covered by the collective bargaining agreement with Washington Federation of State Employees.
