About the Position

In this position you will assist, train, and supervise students, faculty, and other users of mass spectrometry (MS) instrumentation, including liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (LC-QTOF), matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF), and gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) instrumentation.

You will apply your expertise in developing analytical methods to a wide variety of research topics including biological samples, synthetic polymers and small molecules, and environmental samples. Expertise in applying data-driven analytical methodologies to mass spectrometric analysis of biochemical and biological samples is particularly desirable, including proteomics and metabolomics.

Additional position duties/responsibilities include:

  • Serve as technical consultant to faculty, students, and other investigators.
  • Develop and apply new techniques or procedures applicable to research and teaching.
  • Maintain, operate, and service MS instrumentation and related equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with other technical staff to support the research and teaching operations of WWU’s Scientific and Technical Services group.
  • Collaborate with faculty and students on research and teaching, develop and pursue new opportunities for projects and proposals for external funding, including fee-for-service projects with regional companies.
  • Oversee, train, and assist users in the operation of LC-QTOF, MALDI-TOF, GC-MS and related instrumentation, including sample preparation, analysis, data processing and interpretation.
  • Independently prepare and analyze samples, and prepare technical reports on the results.
  • Be active in networking with other mass spectrometry labs in order to support advanced investigations.


The position may require occasional travel to other nearby facilities and/or technical workshops or conferences.

This position is a part-time, 75% appointment position.

Additional job functions (PhD-level only):

  • Participate in mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers.
  • Submit collaborative proposals to upgrade and acquire new instrumentation.  Submission of independent research proposals is also encouraged.
  • Pursue an independent program of research. 
Required Qualifications
  • M.S. in chemistry, physics, materials science, biology, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Minimum 1 year experience operating MS instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to work effectively and inclusively with students, faculty, staff and external partners from diverse backgrounds and social identities.
  • Strong record of effective teamwork and collaboration.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, materials science, biology, or a related field, or equivalent research experience.
  • Experience repairing and maintaining MS instrumentation.
  • Experience with LC-QTOF and MALDI-TOF instrumentation.
Salary Starting salary range for this position is $39,091-$43,434, commensurate with experience; includes an excellent benefits package.
