About the University

Western Washington University has about 650 faculty and 16,000 students.  It is located in Bellingham on a hill overlooking Bellingham Bay.  Bellingham, a city of approximately 90,000, is a physically and culturally active, environmentally friendly, liberal family community with access to good schools.  Its proximity to Seattle (90 miles), Vancouver (55 miles), the ocean, lakes and mountains, provides access to many recreational opportunities as well as to metropolitan facilities and major international companies and research institutions.

The Department of Mathematics has about 25 tenured faculty and 25 contract faculty whose research interests extend over a wide range of areas in applied, computational and purse mathematics, statistics and mathematics education.  Besides our primary focus on undergraduate instruction, we offer a masters program in mathematics with about 20 students.  Excellence in both teaching and scholarship are hallmarks of the department.

The Department of Mathematics at Western Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant/associate professor position in elementary math education, to start Fall 2020.

About the Position The successful candidate is expected to be an excellent teacher committed to undergraduate instruction and curriculum development in Elementary Mathematics Education, both content and methods. Teaching assignments may include some core mathematics courses, depending on the candidate’s interests. The current standard teaching load is two courses (about 9 classroom hours per week) per quarter. Scholarly and programmatic collaboration with colleagues, development of a strong refereed publication record, leadership in math education and curriculum development, departmental service, and the establishment of grant-funded projects are expected. The successful candidate is expected to fulfill teaching and mentoring responsibilities in ways that provide equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students.
Required Qualifications
  • An earned Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in mathematics education, or a closely related field, with comparable credentials in mathematics education, at time of application, or ABD at time of application. If ABD, all doctoral degree requirements must be completed by June 15th of the first year of employment.
  • Evidence of effective teaching in mathematics or mathematics education at the K-12 or college level
  • Evidence of active scholarship, including involvement with scholarly activity in mathematics education
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds
  • To be considered for appointment at the Associate level, evidence of sustained productive scholarship and successful teaching commensurate with tenure-level requirements of the department, college and university
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with professional development activities and outreach in K-12 education
  • Substantial teaching experience in mathematics at the elementary school level
  • Experience working with pre-service or in-service teachers
  • Active involvement with current developments in mathematics education
  • Experience in Early Childhood Education
