About the Position

The Disability Access Center (DAC) Disability Access Managers support Western Washington University’s (WWU) federal, state and institutional responsibilities to provide appropriate and reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities by facilitating the interactive process, implementing accommodations and providing education to the campus community.  This position will work with students with disabilities and coordinate accommodations by partnering with faculty and staff around the institution.  

Position Duties/Responsibilities:

Individual Intake Meeting with Students

  • Meet with the student to gather additional information regarding their educational history and experience with disability.
  • Explain DAC processes and the rights of students with disabilities.
  • Independently plan and conduct a thorough interview to discover what may be potential barriers for gaining full inclusion to the university experience. This includes all student activities as relating to WWU. Examples include but are not limited to, class information, student housing, student recreation, transit, student employment, etc.
  • If there is insufficient information, advise the student on how to obtain required information, including referrals to the Counseling Center, Student Health Center and local specialists.
  • Independently determine appropriate accommodations and/or services for each student. This requires the synthesis of information gathered in the student application, medical documentation, previous accommodation documents (IEP/504) and interview with student. This is to be accomplished in compliance with Federal, State and Institutional policies/laws.
  • Once appropriate accommodations determined, letters of eligibility will be drafted and sent to all parties relating to the individual student accommodation, this includes the student, faculty and/or staff.

Manage the implementation of accommodations

  • Respond to all inquiries regarding specific individual student accommodation via email, phone/video call, or in person meeting.
  • Partner with faculty and staff to understand course design and effectively implement accommodations.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

Provide technical assistance to faculty, staff and student employees to develop inclusive practices and pedagogies.

  • Meet with faculty and staff to debrief past accommodations. Listening to their questions and responding to them either in the moment or in follow up correspondence.
  • Analyze faculty, staff, and student experiences to reveal areas of improvement to the accommodation process. This may include building evaluation procedures to gather data and/or work with other WWU administrators to merge multiple types of data.
  • Evaluate syllabi for potential barriers to people with disabilities.
  • Present findings regarding WWU processes to Disability Access Center Staff and other interested university offices. These presentations will also be a point of engagement for future accommodation development while also serving as an outreach opportunity for the Disability Access center.
  • Train and mentor student employees. This includes but is not limited to office procedures, disability culture, and professional decorum.

Independently evaluate medical and psychological documentation

  • Prior to meeting, evaluate student application, medical/psychological documentation, and any previous accommodation history.
  • Conduct research regarding medical conditions.
  • Survey colleagues nationally to identify accommodations that have worked for others.

Plan and execute educational workshops for students, faculty, and staff

  • Develop lesson plans specific to a campus group (students, faculty, or staff). This may include online resources, printed literature, presentations, and facilitation of dialogue.
  • Implement pre and post workshop evaluations.

Research/Continuing education/Systemic progress

  • Attend a disability related conference once a year
  • Research trends and ongoing evolution of [emphasis of counselor] as it relates to social justice, technology, culture, and higher education
  • Develop policy and procedural recommendations for the Disability Access Center and the University to support systemic change toward full inclusion of people with disabilities in higher education. This will be based on priorities set by the Disability Access Center Director and will be reported to them.

Diversity/Cultural Competency

  • The staff member engages in professional development opportunities to support the development of competence and effectiveness in the areas of inclusion, diversity, multicultural and cross-cultural proficiency, and other related topics.
  • The staff member is in support of: an inclusive environment for staff and students; development of cultural competency skills; and the delivery of programs that support diversity objective of the campus community

Other Duties as assigned

  • Participating in outreach events
  • Assisting other Disability Access Center staff with special projects
Required Qualifications
  • Master's Degree (Bachelor's Degree and equivalent years of relevant experience may substitute for Master's Degree)
  • Experience working with people with disabilities.
  • Strong knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations that govern services to disabled students, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and disability case law.
  • Knowledge of the ADA Architectural Guidelines, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, Section 508
  • Knowledge of the social model of disability
  • A demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and an awareness of diversity within the disability community.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills with experience presenting in small and large group environments
  • Thorough knowledge of student development theory.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Strong computer skills to include working with databases, spreadsheets and word processing
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, or related field.
  • Experience developing and tailoring student success programs and workshops for diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of universal design
  • Fluency in American Sign Language
  • Knowledge of assistive technologies for people with disabilities such as: text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and screenreader software
Salary Starting at $50,130 commensurate experience, including an excellent benefits package.
