About the Department

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences administers the Multidisciplinary Studies major, which is designed for students seeking a flexible academic focus that transcends disciplinary boundaries.  Students may develop a personalized plan of study utilizing resources across multiple departments. The major affords students the opportunity to prepare themselves for work in a variety of areas.  In keeping with the goals, mission, and standards for all students in CHSS, the Multidisciplinary Studies Major aspires to graduate individuals who: can appreciate cultural differences and differences of opinion; have developed moral and aesthetic sensibilities; have mastered the basic tools of literacy, communication, and technology; have acquired levels of knowledge about the natural and social worlds, past and present, sufficient for responsible citizenship and the enjoyment of a civilized society; and are lifelong learners.

About the Position

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences maintains a vacancy pool of qualified persons interested in temporary teaching positions to teach courses for the Multidisciplinary Studies major. In anticipation of possible openings throughout the academic year, applications are accepted continuously for temporary non-tenure-track teaching positions on a part-time basis.  Although most non-tenure-track faculty receive their course assignments for the upcoming academic year by June 30, positions may become available at any time and may be filled on a quarterly basis.

The College and the University value teaching and we expect you to be an exemplary teacher of Multidisciplinary Studies courses; to be current in one or more disciplines; to engage students actively in their own learning, including discussion, writing, and analysis; and to maintain high standards regarding course content.  We expect you to provide students with feedback on their course work, writing assignments, and examinations, and to be available to students through regularly scheduled office hours.  You will be expected to have your students evaluate your courses using the standard University evaluation forms and to make those evaluations available to the associate dean as part of a teaching portfolio submitted for annual review. 

Required Qualifications

  • M.A. in a humanities, social sciences, science, or other relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated successful experience teaching writing at the college or university level
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a humanities, social sciences, science, or other relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated successful experience teaching writing in multiple disciplines at the college or university level
