About the Position

The Safety Officer 3 is responsible for developing and implementing WWU's Laboratory Safety Program. Responsibilities of this position include: 

  • Developing and coordinating major components of health and safety programs including, but not limited to, laboratory safety, chemical safety, biological safety, occupational health and safety, and construction safety
  • Independently conducting complex inspections of University research and academic laboratories to assess existing and potential health hazards and determine compliance with University policies and numerous applicable regulations
  • Assisting in the development of written standard operating procedures, lab specific training programs, and hazard assessments, and selection of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Presenting reports of inspections to lab personnel, University management and safety personnel, covering the inspection conducted, the findings and the minimum standards must be met through remedial measures; following up to check progress and effectiveness of changes instituted; recommending extent to which enforcement action is needed for cases of noncompliance
  • Providing training and educational opportunities for faculty/PIs, departmental safety coordinators, students, staff and other relevant personnel in coordination with appropriate department personnel
  • Conducting and reviewing post-accident and safety violation investigations pursuant to institutional policies and procedures and federal and state laws and regulations
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or closely related field and two years of experience in laboratory safety or related field OR equivalent education/experience
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety requirements
  • Understanding of the health and physical hazards of chemicals and the ability to read and understand information provided on chemical Safety Data Sheets
  • Familiar with safety codes and standards that apply to laboratories
  • Familiar with hazard assessment, implementing the hierarchy of controls
  • Experience implementing administrative procedures and selecting engineering controls for laboratory activities
  • Safety training development and delivery experience
  • Demonstrated professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle stressful situations in a professional manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with the community, University and higher education partners, fostering diversity
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite
  • Experience working independently and within a team environment
  • Ability and willingness to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or other respirator in emergency situations
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification
  • Master's degree in occupational safety and health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety studies, or related field
  • Experience in higher education or other laboratory setting
  • Familiarity with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules and Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories
  • Project management experience
  • Program development experience
  • Experience in implementing, supporting or overseeing safety duties in laboratories
  • Significant experience with safety codes and standards applicable to laboratories
  • Experience providing and explaining laboratory safety requirements in design and construction of laboratory buildings and laboratory renovations
Salary New hires typically begin at $4,378/month including and excellent benefits package
Bargaining Unit This position is part of bargaining unit PTE and is covered by the collective bargaining agreement with Public School Employees of WWU.
