About the Position

The Viking Union is a responsive and student-focused organization that promotes connections through engaging student activities, exploration in outdoor recreation, and excellence in facilities and services.

The Coordinator for Student Advocacy & Identity Resource Centers is responsible for providing program management, advisement, and professional expertise to the equity and identity resource centers within the Associated Students/Viking Union. These programs currently include the:

  • Womxn’s Identity Resource Center (WIRC)
  • Queer Resource Center (QRC)
  • Legal Information Center (LIC)
  • Disability Outreach Center (DOC)
  • The work of the Veteran Community Coordinator

Typical duties include:

  • Engage in professional development opportunities that support increased effectiveness in the area of inclusion, diversity, multicultural and cross-cultural proficiency, and other related topics
  • Build and maintain working relationships with other campus departments/colleagues related to program objectives or needs.
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of student employees (approximately 12-15)
  • Serve as Budget Authority maintaining close oversight of the budget for each student advocacy and identity resource center.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities to support the development of competence and effectiveness in the areas of diversity, inclusion, and equity.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least three years of work experience focused on social justice, diversity, and inclusion work, in either a higher education or community organization setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equity & social justice issues facing historically and currently marginalized communities, including the complexities of interwoven systems of oppression, identity development, and the importance of examining the intersectionality of identity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current literature and theory relating to anti-oppression work and strategies for creating inclusive environments.
  • Demonstrated experience advising and/or supervising college students and/or student organizations grounded in theoretical framework.
  • Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally, including written, interpersonal, and public speaking skills. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a diverse student population in a positive and empowering manner. Experience with managing complex situations that involve conflict in a way that all allows all voices to be heard and respected.
  • Supervision: Experience supervising others and the ability to train students in effective supervision.
  • Training: Knowledge of and experience in developing and presenting training programs for student leaders and/or employees.
  • Budget Management: Knowledge of and experience in budget development and management.
  • Organizational Skills: Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, with an ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic work environment.
  • Diversity/Cultural Competency: Ability to work successfully with a diverse student body and staff and possess a strong commitment to creating an inclusive environment for staff and students, the delivery of programs that support the diversity objective of the campus community, and the development of cultural competency skills.
  • Technology: Experience using and learning new software technology and using social media
  • Ability to work weekend and evening hours is necessary as many organization meetings and events occur during these times.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's and/or Master’s degree in a relevant field, such as Sociology, a form of Cultural Studies, Gender & Sexual Identity Studies, Human Services/Social Work, Political Science, Equity & Diversity in Law, Policy Studies, Student Affairs/Higher Education Administration, or other similar academic background.
  • One or more years of professional work experience in an organization, or on a program, specifically designed to meet the needs of an under served, underrepresented, and/or marginalized population.
  • Event Planning: Knowledge of and experience in planning, advising and coordinating events and activities.
  • Student Leadership/Student Development: Knowledge of student leadership and student development theories and their applications in practice.
  • Knowledge of current resources and trends in student activities, educational and social issues programming.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, and faculty.
Salary $43,400 - $50,700 commensurate experience, including an excellent benefits package
