About the Position

In this position your primary roles will be to train, supervise, and assist students, faculty, and visitors in the operation of the Laser-ablation ICP-MS for geoscience applications, to assist with similar duties in other geochemical facilities in the Geology Department, to refine and develop laboratory methods and procedures for geoscience applications in geochemistry, to collaborate with faculty and students on research projects, and to develop and pursue projects and proposals for external funding.

The LA-ICP-MS instrument is housed in the WWU Advanced Materials Science and Engineering Center (AMSEC), and duties of this position include collaboration with AMSEC staff, faculty, and students, with opportunities to foster interdisciplinary research in the geosciences, materials science, and marine and environmental sciences.

This is a permanent, part-time (70% FTE, 12-month) position.

Typical duties include:

  • Oversee and assist geology students and faculty in the operation of the LA-ICP-MS
  • Assist and educate geology students and faculty in LA-ICP-MS data reduction and evaluation of data quality
  • Evaluate analytical quality and troubleshoot instrument problems
  • Assist and educate research users on sample preparation for LA-ICP-MS and geochemical instruments
  • Oversee undergraduate research and graduate research
  • Submit collaborative proposals to upgrade and advance the instrumentation
  • Serve as a PI or Co-PI on Dept proposals to conduct LA-ICP-MS research
Required Qualifications
  • M.S. in Geoscience or Physical Science 
  • Minimum 1 year of experience operating or maintaining LA-ICP-MS instrumentation and performing data reduction for geological samples
  • Computer skills, including experience using LA-ICP-MS data reduction software
  • Ability and interest to work with other interdisciplinary programs in materials science and marine and environmental sciences 
  • Ability or experience working effectively with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Geoscience
  • Several years of experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing LA-ICP-MS
  • Experience with data reduction routines and data quality control
  • Geoscience publication record with LA-ICP-MS analyses and/or methodologies
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with other geochemistry applications, such as stable isotopes or elemental analysis of C,N,S,H is desirable.
Salary information Starting salary range is $34,239-$38,044, commensurate with experience.  Includes an excellent benefits package.
