About the Position

Western Washington University College of Fine and Performing Arts and the Department of Theatre and Dance is seeking a Full-time, 12 month Technical Director with an anticipated start date of September 2019. Under the leadership of the Department Chair, the Technical Director implements all technical aspects of the Department’s 5-8 annual productions. The department has a well-equipped 5000 square foot scene shop with areas for carpentry, metal work, paint, props, and an office. The Technical Director works with a collaborative faculty and an enthusiastic group of design and technical theater undergraduates. The position includes a competitive salary and full benefits, including 16 hours of vacation leave per month. 

Typical duties include:

  • Consulting and collaborating with diverse constituencies, including students, faculty, and staff.
  • Employing a range of theatrical construction means and methods, including welding, rigging, lighting, projection, and sound equipment.
  • Generating working drawings and paperwork required to realize productions.
  • Working independently to meet deadlines in an environment of change, employing rigorous time management.
  • Mentoring students and exemplifying professional practices and skills.
  • Supervising staff and students in the construction, installation and strike of all scenic elements.
  • Sourcing materials from vendors and keeping detailed records, following strict purchasing guidelines.
  • Managing the departmental scene shop, and maintaining shop equipment.
  • Working with University Risk Management to create safe workplaces.


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Significant academic or professional experience as a Technical Director (minimum 2 years).
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to work effectively with a diverse community.
  • Demonstrated verbal, written, and graphic communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with theatrical scenic construction including welding, lighting, projection, sound control systems, and theatrical rigging.
  • Proficient with CAD drafting and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to frequently work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to operate large vehicles, drive a manual transmission and a valid Washington State Driver’s license (at the time on employment).
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. and climb ladders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BFA or MFA in Technical Theatre.
  • Experience preparing a space for a dance performance.
Salary Starting range is $47,214- $52,460 commensurate with experience; includes an excellent benefits package
