Assistant Professor of Linguistics (Semantics) Bellingham, WA Linguistics
The Department of Linguistics at Western Washington University is inviting applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning September 2020. We seek a specialist in semantics with demonstrated ability to teach a wide range of undergraduate courses. The applicant would be expected to teach a core course in semantics and pragmatics, an advanced course in semantics or pragmatics, and other courses in the major, such as introductory linguistics, linguistic analysis, and upper division topics courses. Although Linguistics has been an interdepartmental program for 20 years and has offered a BA in Linguistics since 2002, 2019-20 is the inaugural year of the Linguistics Department. Thus, the position will be one of the first in the newly-formed department and the candidate will therefore be able to continue to shape the curriculum, expanding the department’s research and teaching in novel ways and complementing existing strengths and research interests of other Linguistics faculty. Additional responsibilities include: standard quarter-system teaching assignment (2-2-2); exemplary teaching; active program of scholarly activity; service to the Department through a range of activities. The successful candidate will be expected to fulfill teaching and mentoring responsibilities in ways that provide equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students and will offer a strong record of community-engaged scholarship and research ethics.

We seek individuals who are enthusiastic about teaching and who will establish a vigorous research program, and are particularly interested in those who will combine field and analytical, experimental or modeling approaches in their research, and who will involve undergraduate and Masters-level students in their research. The ideal candidate will enhance our existing strengths in geoscience teaching and research by developing new courses and research avenues in igneous petrology. Broad areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the timescales of magmatic processes, the evolution of the continental crust, mantle, oceanic lithosphere/ocean island/mid-ocean ridge processes, the recycling of elements and volatiles within arc magmas and subduction systems, and links between tectonic and magmatic processes.

The Executive Director of the Institute for Global Engagement is the Senior International Officer for Western Washington University, with the work focused through the various IGE programs. The Executive Director provides the University community with leadership and oversight of support services for international students, study abroad and exchange programs, strategic international partnerships and agreements, and international scholar programs. The Executive Director also provides strategic thinking and advocacy for the University’s internationalization efforts. This is a 12-month Academic Administrator position.
