We are a part of the WWU President’s Office and are responsible for fostering and maintaining effective relationships and communication with the legislative and executive branches of state and federal government. We work closely with elected representatives and their staffs along with Western administrators, faculty, students and staff. We also educate the campus community of legislation affecting the University.

About the Position

The WWU Government Relations Policy and Affairs Coordinator is a permanent position that is full-time from January to April, and part-time from May-December.

As the Government Relations Policy and Affairs Coordinator, you will assist in the administrative, logistical and operational tasks specific to Western Washington University’s goals and objectives in its state and federal government relations program. You will have the opportunity to provide support, direction and leadership as part of a team that works at the state level with the Governor’s Office, Legislature, and state policy, regulatory and fiscal agencies and at the federal level with the U.S. Congress and federal agencies.

Your responsibilities will include:

 Monitor legislative activity

  • Review, track and analyze legislation impacting Western and higher education, and oversee Western’s online bill tracking system

Manage daily office operations

  • Manage administrative and logistical tasks specific to the Office of Government Relations
  • Track University-wide lobbying efforts, create public agency lobbying reports on behalf of the University, and file reports with the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission on quarterly basis
  • Receive and respond to inquiries from legislative staff, elected officials, state agencies and the Governor’s office.  Work with the Executive Director and other university staff to ensure an accurate and timely response.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Office of Government Relations and the university; establish and maintain excellent working relationships with university contacts.

Manage Government Relations’ online presence

  • Work with the Executive Director of Government Relations to maintain the Office of Government Relations’ online presence, including effectively communicating and growing viewership through social media, the Western Legislative Review online blog.

Conduct research and prepare strategic communication

  • Conduct research, policy analysis, special reports and correspondences as needed to develop clear and persuasive written material and oral presentations (e.g. speeches, testimony, fact sheets, website, social media) to facilitate communication with internal and external audiences
  • Provide recommendations to advance Western’s strategic goals and priorities with both the state and federal government
  • Design, recommend and coordinate legislative policy-based responses in partnership with appropriate University departments
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience
  • Two years of relevant legislative experience in a state legislature, U.S. Congress, or in legislative or government relations in other public sectors, or two years of other relevant experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; strong customer service skills, including demonstrated ability to work with all levels of an organization and to apply appropriate flexibility in response to issues and opposing points of view
  • Excellent analytical and research skills
  • Demonstrated ability to understand state and federal legislative language and process
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, understand and clearly communicate complex public policy issues
  • Demonstrated proficiency with electronic social media formats
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Highly developed organizational skills with high level of accuracy, thoroughness and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated commitment to support a workplace culture in which diversity is respected and demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and cultivate and contribute to an inclusive climate
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Demonstrated understanding of state budgeting processes

This position is full-time from January to April, and half-time from May-December. 

New hires typically start at a full-time equivalent salary of $54,000 - $60,000 per year (or $36,000 - $40,000 actual salary), commensurate with experience.  The full hiring range salary for a full-time equivalent is $54,000 - $69,000 (or $36,000 - 46,000 actual salary).
