About the Position Position Summary

The Assistant Director of University Residences for Information Technology provides oversight and leadership for technology and technology-related services (IT) the office of University residences and the students living on campus. The Assistant Director supervises and directs the operations of the University Residences technology program which includes ResTek - an operating unit that supports residential students connecting their devices to the WWU internet and provides multiple in-residence computer labs for the 4,000 on campus residents a software development component that creates and supports web database applications that simplify many on-line services for students and staff - and an IT service component that provides support for 60 full-time and 130 student University Residences employees. The Assistant Director manages the University’s Western Card program, an all-university service providing the official campus multi-function access and transaction card to over 17,000 students, faculty, and staff.

Scope of Responsibility

As the leader of the University Residences IT program, the Assistant Director establishes its overall direction and assesses its progress. Under limited supervision from the Associate Director of University Residences for Business and Information Services, the Assistant Director assists in the development of and manages an IT budget of over $450,000 for labor, equipment and supplies, develops short- and long-range plans that address University Residences current and future IT needs, and implements those plans through supervision of staff and through the establishment and nurturing of inter-departmental service agreements that provide primary and second-tier IT services (e.g. WWU’s Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS), Enterprise Application Services (EAS), Academic Technology and User Services (ATUS)). The Assistant Director directly supervises one exempt Web Systems Developer and one classified Program Coordinator and 15 student employees.

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree
  2. One year full-time work in a technology domain such as: IT project management, network support, IT customer support, software development and/or support.
  3. Excellent listening, speaking, and writing skills
  4. Demonstrated experience supervising personnel including hiring, scheduling, directing work, coaching, and performance appraisals
  5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse and underrepresented identity groups
  6. Demonstrated ability to communicate, teach and train complex concepts in informal and formal settings
  7. Demonstrated experience making management-level decisions
  8. Demonstrated understanding of the fundamental concepts of network support, user account & permissions management, customer support
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management of Information Systems (MIS), or technology-related field.
  2. Experience in technology-related management
  3. Experience working effectively in an educational environment
  4. Experience implementing business process analyses or in interpreting, assessing, and prioritizing user needs.
  5. Experience planning, implementing, and/or supporting third party information systems
