About the Department The Collection Services division of the Western Libraries facilitates and coordinates the management of the Libraries’ collections. This collection management includes stewardship of the library resource access budget and active engagement at every stage of the lifecycle of library materials. The division’s work encompasses but is not limited to the selection, acquisition, organization, delivery, and preservation of content, as well as efforts to make content discoverable and accessible; regular and ongoing collection assessment; careful monitoring of physical space; leveraging regional and national relationships to supplement local holdings; and one-on-one service to end users. In consultation with their supervisor, members of Collection Services are encouraged to seek professional growth opportunities beyond their immediate duties, such as participation in library committees, programs, or groups; trainings or other professional development; or service to the wider university.
About the Position

In this position you will use independent judgment and expertise to administer, supervise, direct, and advise on the various work units that comprise Resource Access, including acquisitions, inter-library loan and Summit, financial functions, and Alma system functionality. You will be responsible for a wide scope of complex duties, including oversight of the $2.2M resource access budget, contracts management, project management, and supervision.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Managing a collaborative, service-oriented team to provide access to library collections through purchase, loan, or licensing;
  • Overseeing the expenditure of the resource access budget;
  • Implementing appropriate technologies and processes; and
  • Monitoring and ensuring compliance with state and university purchasing policies and procedures.
  • Serving as a member of the Collection Services leadership team, collaborating with other managers across the division on strategic planning, policy development and implementation, and logistics

For State HR purposes, this position is classified as a Program Manager A.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus at least five years of experience in the functional operations of a library, including at least two years in acquisitions, resource sharing, or similar library service
  • Knowledge of library functions, practices, and procedures
  • Ability to interact courteously and professionally with users with a diverse range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives
  • Experience directing the work of others, including student or full-time staff
  • Experience working in a team environment with colleagues from a variety of backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to use and explain information tools and services
  • Excellent organizational skills with an attention to detail; ability to solve problems
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of current academic library resource acquisitions and sharing processes and procedures
  • Experience with budget management in an academic library setting
  • Experience supervising student or full-time staff
  • Experience with Ex Libris’ Alma library system
Salary New hires typically begin at $4,146 per month, including an excellent benefits package.
Bargaining Unit This position is part of bargaining unit D and is covered by the collective bargaining agreement with Public School Employees of WWU.
