About the Department

The Department of Global Humanities and Religions (formerly Liberal Studies) at Western Washington University consists of eight tenured or tenure-track faculty whose courses serve majors and minors in Humanities and Religion as well as making significant contributions to the university’s general education curriculum. It is a multidisciplinary Humanities department with an interdisciplinary curriculum emphasizing cultural history and Religious Studies. The department’s courses range from ancient to modern and encompass most of the globe. Faculty in the department are also committed to providing high quality courses that prepare both majors and non-majors with skills in research, analysis, and writing. Please see more here:

About the Position

The Department of Global Humanities and Religions at Western Washington University (Bellingham) seeks to hire a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor (non-tenure-track) with expertise in Religion, Culture, and Society of the modern Global South for the academic year 2019-2020 (beginning on September 16, 2019, through June 15, 2020).  The department’s specific preference is for a scholar with primary interests in Christianity in the Global South, and with a regional specialization in Africa, African diasporas, and/or Latin America.


This position will have responsibility for teaching six courses (two courses each in Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters), a mix of lower-division surveys (45 student cap) and more specialized upper-division electives (30 student cap). The department is particularly interested in scholars whose teaching and research engage the study of religion in Africa, African diasporas, and/or Latin America, including comparative approaches and/or attention to cross-cultural interaction, and that focus on the modern period (from the eighteenth century to the present).  A demonstrated ability to teach a course on one or more of the following would also be desirable:  Humanities of Africa; Humanities of Latin America; Introduction to the Study of Religion; Religion and Society in Africa. The department is particularly interested in scholars whose fields of interest or expertise include religious studies; history (especially social and cultural history); anthropology (especially social and cultural anthropology); literature; film; popular culture; and/or art history.  

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or ABD by time of application in Religious Studies or a related field
  • Demonstrated potential for successful teaching at the university level
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse students, faculty, and staff, including a commitment to cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. by time of application in Religious Studies or a related field, with expertise in Christianity in the modern Global South
  • Relevant teaching experience at the university level
