Marine and Coastal Sciences at Western Washington University

Faculty from multiple academic departments in the Huxley College of the Environment and the College of Science and Engineering participate in marine and coastal sciences research and academic programs. These include the new B.S. degree in Marine in Coastal Sciences, the Marine Science Distinguished Scholars Program, and the M.S.-level Marine and Estuarine Studies Program. Shannon Point Marine Center (SPMC) is located in Anacortes, approximately 45 miles from Western’s main Bellingham campus, on a 78-acre campus covered mostly by Pacific lowlands forest and distinguished by 3000 feet of undisturbed beachfront. SPMC supports and promotes Western Washington University’s undergraduate and master’s programs in the marine sciences; supports research by WWU scientists across marine-related fields; provides access to facilities for visiting scientists from around the world; supports supervised, independent research for undergraduates nationwide via federally-funded programs; and promotes ocean literacy through targeted K-12 and public education initiatives.  SPMC is nationally recognized for promoting diversity, equity and inclusion through externally funded programs that create student opportunities at the marine center.

Local facilities, including a flow-through seawater system, a research vessel fleet, SCUBA support, oceanographic instrumentation, and a well-equipped analytical chemistry laboratory, support the research activities of WWU faculty researchers and resident scientists at SPMC. SPMC is nationally recognized for involving undergraduates, including members of under-represented minority groups, in the research programs of its faculty. About the Position

The Director identifies priorities for and facilitates continued development of marine and coastal science programs at WWU. The Director fosters a climate of research innovation in marine and coastal sciences. In coordination with the Marine and Coastal Sciences Academic Program Director and relevant academic departments, the director oversees undergraduate and graduate academic programs in marine and coastal science, promoting a team spirit within the marine sciences at WWU by maintaining and strengthening positive relationships among faculty, classified, and professional staff. Responsibilities also include supervising staff at SPMC, authorizing budgets for SPMC and undergraduate academic programs, and seeking external funding to support the continued development of marine and coastal science programs and facilities. The Director also provides leadership for advancing marine and coastal sciences in WWU planning processes, aligning those efforts with the University’s mission and strategic goals while fostering productive relationships with college deans, university executive officers, and administrative officials throughout the university. The Director works to promote diversity, equity and inclusion for the staff, faculty, and students in marine sciences programs at WWU. The Director brings awareness of regional, national, and international trends in marine and coastal sciences, including the integration of research, education, and outreach, and will build relationships with key external partners.  The position requires a physical presence in both the Anacortes and Bellingham campuses and associated travel.

Required Qualifications
  • A PhD and evidence of an active, marine-related research program that has resulted in a significant record of scholarship
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in marine and coastal sciences at the regional or national level
  • A record of academic and professional achievement and scholarship sufficient to warrant tenure and appointment at the rank of associate or full professor
  • Administrative experience that includes budget management and personnel supervision
  • Demonstrated experience in program development in a university setting
  • Demonstrated success in securing external funding
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to promote diversity, equity and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation
  • Successful experience as a creative and resourceful fundraiser
  • Experience partnering with governmental and non-governmental organizations, and private enterprise
  • Experience with development and management of facilities
  • Experience in formal program assessment
  • Experience in promoting a diverse, equitable and inclusive working and learning environment
