About the Department

The Electrical Engineering program offers ABET-accredited undergraduate degrees within the Engineering and Design Department. In response to high student demand and demand for graduates, the program is growing in both faculty and student numbers with further expansion expected. The position offers a unique and exciting opportunity to be part of the continued growth and development of the program in areas related to advanced vehicle systems, and to help build and strengthen connections to PACCAR Inc. and other local industry.

As stated in the Department’s Mission, the engineering programs in the Engineering & Design Department have a strong commitment to teaching and scholarship that helps develop industry-ready graduates through a combination of creative problem-solving, analytical skills development, and experiential learning. Most courses have a strong laboratory component to prepare students with the modern tools and processes used in industry.

The Department and the College of Sciences and Engineering are committed to creating equitable and inclusive learning and working environments for their students, faculty, and staff.  A number of faculty-led initiatives and committees focus on diversity and inclusivity in the classroom and beyond. About the Position

Western Washington University (WWU) invites applications from candidates for the full-time, tenure-track PACCAR Professor of Electrical Engineering (EE) position with a start date of September 16, 2019. While expecting to hire at the Assistant Professor level, candidates with exceptional qualifications may be considered at the Associate Professor or Professor rank.

The PACCAR Professor of Electrical Engineering will be an important part of the growth of the EE program by providing leadership in the development of curriculum related to advanced vehicle systems and to facilitate expanded research and development partnerships with PACCAR. We seek an individual with teaching and research interests in fields applicable to automated vehicles, connected vehicles, or vehicle electrification, such as:

    • embedded and cyber-physical systems,
    • wireless and wired communications,
    • electronics and sensors,
    • low-level and high-level controls,
    • electric motors, batteries, and power electronics,
    • human machine interface,
    • image, vision, perception processing,
    • machine learning, and
    • systems engineering for functional safety.

The position entails developing and teaching lab-based EE courses, advising, research, community engagement and service to support the program, the Department, and the University.

The position requires a strong commitment to teaching and scholarship that supports the Department’s Mission. Teaching responsibilities will include core courses in EE, service courses for engineering, as well as advanced courses in the candidate’s area of specialization. Scholarship responsibilities will include developing and maintaining a relevant program of scholarship that involves undergraduate researchers and partnerships with PACCAR. It is expected that the person fulfills working, teaching, and mentoring responsibilities in ways that provide equitable and inclusive environments for all students, faculty, and staff.

Additional responsibilities include assisting with curriculum development and accreditation activities, maintaining currency in electrical engineering practice, student advising and recruitment, developing internship and interdisciplinary opportunities, professional interactions with colleagues and industry, and student club and professional development activities.

Required Qualifications
  • One of the following:
    • An earned PhD in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline, received from an accredited institution prior to September 16, 2019, or
    • An earned MS degree (received by time of application) in electrical engineering, or a closely related discipline, and significant, recent, and relevant industry-based professional experience.
  • Teaching and scholarship interests and experience that are closely aligned with the Mission of the Department.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds.
  • Evidence of the ability to teach core courses and advanced courses applicable to automated vehicles, connected vehicles, or vehicle electrification.
  • Evidence of the ability to maintain a relevant program of scholarly activity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Recent, relevant experience in industry, industry sponsored grants, commercialization, and/or industry relations.
  • Successful prior teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in automated vehicles, connected vehicles, or vehicle electrification.
