About the Department

The WWU Counseling Center provides students with short-term individual, couples, and group counseling, as well as workshops, outreach programs and consultations to the Western community.  Our counseling staff includes a collaborative team of 10+ FTE of Psychologists and Licensed Mental Health Counselors, Case Manager and Men’s Resiliency Specialist positions.  We have four Doctoral Intern positions, and two full-time support staff.   We work closely with the Student Health Center and Prevention and Wellness Services to provide coordinated services for students.  WWU’s Counseling Center is accredited by the International Association for Counseling Services, and an APPIC-member site for Doctoral Interns.

About the Position

Western Washington University’s Counseling Center has an opening for a permanent, full-time, 12-month Suicide Prevention Coordinator. This position will further develop and implement the campus-wide suicide prevention and mental health promotion program that will include education and awareness training for faculty, staff and students, program and policy development, program evaluation, collaboration with campus and community partners, peer education and social marketing. This position will play a key role in prevention efforts on Western’s campus. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Continued development and implementation of suicide prevention strategies aimed at increasing college students’ mental well-being and maximizing students’ ability to attain academic success, with multiculturally informed programming inclusive of diverse populations.
  • Utilization of theory and research to inform prevention priorities; using evaluation to assess prevention outcomes.
  • Seeking and cultivating interdisciplinary campus and community partnerships that advance suicide prevention and mental health promotions initiatives.
  • Using mental health communication strategies and social marketing as part of a comprehensive prevention programming.
  • Coordinating program’s website and social media efforts.
  • Coordinate all general outreach, tabling events, and other opportunities to interface with the campus community.
  • Chair the Suicide Prevention Advisory Committee and serve on relevant campus committees and workgroups.
  • Supervising student interns and volunteers.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field and four years of work experience in a capacity related to duties to be performed OR Master’s degree in health education, public health, or other specific health-related area, and two years of work experience in a capacity related to duties to be performed.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and evaluating comprehensive, population-based prevention programming.
  • Experience with suicide prevention programs.
  • Experience in applying a social-ecological framework to prevention strategies.
  • Demonstrated commitment, interest and experience in working with issues of diversity.
  • Experience leading peer education programs including development of curriculum, recruiting and training peer educators and coordinating and supervising peer educator presentations.
  • Experience in facilitating groups, leading discussions, and providing presentations to student populations.
  • Demonstrated skills in organizing and managing multiple complex job duties.

 

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in health education, public health, or other specific health-related area.
  • Experience in developing and implementing comprehensive suicide prevention programs.
  • Experience with innovative outreach and education applications.
  • Experience in working with campus and community coalitions.
  • Experience with prevention programming on a college campus.
  • Supervision experience with college students.
  • Demonstrated experiences with organizing and implementing large-scale public health initiatives.
  • Experience with developing and implementing social marketing campaigns.
  • Experience utilizing web and social media prevention initiatives.
