The College of Fine and Performing Arts is comprised of the departments of Art/Art History, Design, Music, and Theatre and Dance, housed in eight buildings with five performance spaces, including a Performing Arts Center overlooking Bellingham Bay. The College also is home to the Western Gallery and Public Art Collection, one of the top ten outdoor sculpture collections in the country. 

The Department of Music offers BM, BA and MM degrees to approximately 180 majors. The faculty consists of 39 full and part time faculty. The department serves as a focal point for the campus and the regional community through collaboration, participation and leadership in music performance and instruction.

About the Position Assistant Professor of Choral/Vocal Music Education - full-time, tenure track

The Department of Music at Western Washington University seeks a dynamic choral music educator and experienced choral conductor to join the faculty beginning fall, 2019. The successful candidate will have expertise in secondary choral music education and performance practice, with teaching experience in public schools and the ability to recruit and retain students from diverse social identities and backgrounds. Candidates must be able to contribute effectively and collegially to a positive learning environment that prioritizes preparing strong music educators for careers in teaching music.

Position Responsibilities


Specific teaching assignments of the position will reflect the candidate’s skill set and department needs, including:

Direct the WWU University Choirs (Adv. Treble Chorale, University Treble Choir, University Bass Choir, and others as needed)

Teach courses in choral music education

Supervise choral music education practica and internships



Engage in research/scholarly/creative activity



Work collaboratively with voice faculty to recruit and retain students

Work with music education faculty to advise choral music education students

Attend to administrative detail of the choral music education program as needed

Participate in faculty governance and university service

Create a strong regional presence through active participation in state, regional and national professional associations


Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Music
  • Minimum of three years secondary choral teaching in public schools
  • Demonstrated success in choral education and performance.
  • Strong background in diverse choral literature, including African American music traditions, vocal jazz, contemporary music, and other popular idioms
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate equitable and inclusive learning environments for students with diverse social identities and backgrounds
  • Evidence of strong communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Earned Doctorate in Music
  • Demonstrated success as a university-level choral methods instructor/choral conductor
  • Demonstrated success as a supervisor of student interns
  • Demonstrated success developing music education curricula
