About the Department

The Career Services Center provides services and programs to assist students and alumni to establish and clarify their personal, educational, and career goals and obtain career employment or seek admission to graduate or professional education programs following completion of their studies at Western. Services and programs include career counseling, career fair events, classroom presentations, declaring a major programs, employer relations, graduate school advising, interview preparation, job search services, mock interviews, networking services, and resume workshops.

About the Position

The Director for the Career Services Center (CSC) provides overall leadership and decision making in developing, managing, implementing and assessing CSC’s strategic program goals and in carrying out its mission to serve WWU students and alumni by providing resources and opportunities to assist with career exploration, career self-assessment, and job placement. The Director is responsible for supervision of a dynamic team of professionals, including student employees, for managing the day to day operations of the department, and for fiscal management. This position works extensively with the Deans of Western’s colleges, industry leaders throughout the state, and with Alumni and University Advancement in collaborations that benefit and support students.

Program Management and Oversight

  • Direct the daily operations of the Center
  • In collaboration with Career Services staff, develop and implement the department’s strategic plan with a goal of increasing student participation earlier in the career exploration experience
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct university events that prepare students for employment and provide employment placement opportunities
  • Address students, student organizations, family members, faculty, alumni groups, and other administrators on career-related issues.
  • Represent the department at workshops, events, fairs, and on committees within professional organizations and across campus
  • Counsel students on an individual and group basis regarding career planning and employment opportunities (as time permits)
  • Develop and implement an office diversity action plan; foster an environment in which diversity and inclusion are valued and promoted in CSC’s services, programs and marketing information
  • Research and incorporate best practices from the industry into program and service delivery, including the use of technology in career exploration and in office operations
  • Serve as a member of the Executive Director’s (ED) Core Team and provide input on strategic planning, assessment activities, and other matters of impact across the departments reporting to the ED

Supervision of Employees

  • Provide guidance and leadership to program and support staff
  • Educate staff on the tenets of the profession using national association resources
  • Support the professional development of staff
  • Provide evaluation feedback for staff
  • Address personnel matters and employee performance, as needed
  • Ensure institutional and departmental policies and procedures are updated, well understood and adhered to by departmental staff

Strategic Outreach

  • Develop and maintain external relationships with employers, alumni and family members and further expand their involvement in programs and events, internship opportunities and post-graduate employment
  • Work with a Career Services Advisory Board comprised of key leaders and alumni in industry throughout the state
  • Build relationships with key campus partners (Deans, Institute Directors, Faculty Chairs) to further embed a career services model and Career Specialists in the colleges
  • Work closely with colleagues in the division and across campus to provide coordinated services that support student success

Budget Management

  • Forecast, develop and monitor multiple program budgets
  • Serve as budget authority for Career Services
  • Develop budget recommendations for fiscal planning in collaboration with the ED
  • Market and award scholarships (4) coordinated by the Career Services Center in collaboration with Western’s Scholarship Center.

Assessment and Planning

  • Demonstrate a commitment to assessment activities and use the results of these activities to monitor outcomes and inform program decisions and strategic planning
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director for Student Success Initiatives, prepare annual employment surveys to provide the campus community and public with information on the employment rates of Western grads
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, counseling, business, or related discipline
  • Six or more years of progressive experience in higher education career development services
  • Five or more years of supervisory experience with full-time staff
  • Experienced in program development and fiscal management
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and delegate, as needed
  • Demonstrated knowledge of career development best practices, industry trends, and workforce priorities
  • Documented skills and experience collaborating with various constituent groups (e.g. students, staff, faculty, alumni, family members, employers) to support program priorities
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing a welcoming, inclusive and cooperative work environment that values diversity
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with computer technologies that facilitate service delivery, communication/connections, and community outreach
Preferred Qualifications
  • Fluency in two or more languages
  • Knowledge of Banner or similar electronic information system
Salary Salary range of $75,600 - $84,000; commensurate with education and experience.
