About the Department

The Sociology Department is comprised of thirteen full-time faculty engaged in a wide range of research activities who often involve undergraduate students in their research.  The Department offers four different undergraduate degrees in sociology.  The Center for Social Science Instruction is housed within the Department and provides assistance to faculty and students with computing and statistical analysis.  The Department also maintains a significant international focus, and has sponsored a number of faculty-led study abroad programs.  The Sociology Department and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences support Western's mission to bring together individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in an inclusive, student-centered university that develops the potential of learners and the well-being of communities.  We encourage applications from women, people of color, people with disabilities, veterans, and other candidates from underrepresented backgrounds and with diverse experiences interested in this opportunity.  For more information about the Department, please see https://chss.wwu.edu/sociology 

The Sociology Department maintains a vacancy pool of qualified persons interested in temporary part-time teaching positions.  In anticipation of possible openings throughout the academic year, applications are accepted continuously.  Positions may become available at any time and are frequently filled on a quarterly basis.

About the Position

The Department, the College and the University value teaching and you are expected to be an exemplary teacher; to be current in your discipline; to engage students actively in their own learning, including discussion, writing, and analysis; and to maintain high standards regarding course content.  You are also expected to provide students with feedback on their course work and examinations, and to be available to students through regularly-scheduled office hours in keeping with department policy.  You will be expected to have your students evaluate your courses using the standard University evaluation forms to make those evaluations available to the department chair for annual review.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching undergraduate courses within the department's existing curriculum
  • Teaching courses corresponding with the applicant's area of expertise, in consultation with the Department Chair
  • Fulfilling teaching responsibilities in ways that provide equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students
Required Qualifications
  • ABD in Sociology or a closely related social science field by time of appointment
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds
  • Demonstrated potential for excellent teaching in sociology
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Sociology or a closely related social science field by time of appointment
  • Successful prior teaching experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Salary Commensurate with experience and qualifications
