About the Department

University Advancement includes the Alumni Association, Western Washington University Foundation and Special Events and exists to support Western Washington University by building enduring relationships with its constituents and raising funds from private resources. University Advancement staff members provide broad-based programming to create life-long relationships and raise, process, manage and steward annual and major gifts from alumni, parents, friends, faculty and staff, corporations and foundations.  Both the Alumni Association and the Foundation are 501(c)(3) organizations with volunteer boards.  The Office of University Advancement supports Western’s mission to bring together individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in an inclusive, student-centered university that develops the potential of learners and the well-being of communities. About the Position

This full-time, permanent position reports to the Director of Development for Annual Giving and Alumni Memberships and is crucial to meeting the mission of Western Washington University as one of three Annual Giving Team members responsible for raising $3.6 million in annual gifts from more than 8000 donors and 5000 alumni memberships. The Assistant Director is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive digital philanthropy program that includes crowdfunding and affinity driven fundraising, with an emphasis on building a culture of philanthropy and a ‘donor pipeline’. The Assistant Director is also responsible for the University’s Phonathon program, managing ~40 student callers in an automated calling center.

This is an exciting opportunity to grow within a team dedicated to utilizing best practices and exploring new strategies in a changing fundraising landscape, located in beautiful Bellingham, Washington.

This position is responsible for managing and leading WWU’s crowdfunding program, called VikingFunder and our Give Day platform (both are currently powered by Scalefunder), and coordinating with campus & community partners as collaborators in digital fundraising campaigns, including training, goal setting, project management of each fundraising campaign.

This position is also responsible for managing the Phonathon program, which includes recruiting, hiring,  training, managing and motivating ~40 student employees. It also includes requesting and loading alumni and donor records into our Campus Call Software and coordinating with Dean's and Department Chairs to develop pre-call messages, calling scripts and pledge fulfillment messaging based on current needs and impact statement.

The AD will provide statistical analysis and reports on their various areas of responsibility and adjust strategy accordingly. This position will also research and implement new annual giving technologies as needed and manage additional Annual Giving Projects as needed.

The AD will develop effective partnerships with co-workers throughout the University by sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed.  The AD must be comfortable working with a diverse group of constituents and the level of ambiguity that comes from a changing environment.  

Some evening and weekend work is required.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree
• Proficiency using the Microsoft Office Suite
• Knowledge of and comfort using various forms of social media including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
• Excellent communication skills: verbal, written and interpersonal
• Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate others
• Demonstrated ability organizing, managing and prioritizing multiple complex projects and programs simultaneously
• Knowledge of digital communications/annual giving principles and marketing techniques

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience managing crowdfunding/digital campaigns
  • Experience with phonathons or with automated calling centers (i.e. sales or support centers)
  • Experience in alumni relations, higher education or non-profit sector
  • Expertise using Microsoft Excel, Banner, Scalefunder and Imodules Software platforms
  • Strong customer service skills
Salary Commensurate with experience and qualifications. The full hiring range for this position is $46,040-$52,828.
