About the Department

The Ethnic Student Center (ESC) is a student-run organization within the Association Students (AS) of Western Washington University and was established in 1991, and part of the Dean of Students Unit. Our goal is to help students Affirm their identity, Build a sense of community, and Cultivate leadership (Our "ABCs"). The ESC is also home to several diverse clubs open to students of all backgrounds. These clubs promote the values of the ESC and offer a “home away from home” for all students. Many students within the ESC have moved on to become leaders on campus and in the community.

About the Position

At a time when the need to affirm identities and instill resiliency is so vital in the higher education journey, Western remains dedicated to ensuring that its diverse and cross-cultural student groups have welcoming space and environment to gather, meet, and celebrate their unique identities. Western is currently expanding its Ethnic Student Center (ESC) space to provide a larger and more comprehensive physical space for these groups on campus. The ESC Club Advising Manager is a new position at Western and the position will be responsible for working with the leadership of the 19 ESC clubs to ensure that their club recruitment, events and fundraisers are successful. As our ESC Club Advising Manager you will work very closely with clubs on events such as Heritage Dinners, events and fundraisers on campus that raise awareness of each club's culture.  You will also supervise all ESC Student employees and will be responsible for hiring, training and evaluating the student staff each year. You will work closely with the ESC Director and the ESC Programming and Event Manager and may assume some duties of the Programming and Events Manger in their absence.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, event management, business administration, education, adult education, or another field of study that supports the work duties or Bachelor’s degree and equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of two (2) years of advising experience working in education, student activities, student affairs, leadership development, government, military, or related field with ethnically and racially diverse communities
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience that demonstrates leadership experience and developing educational, cultural and social programs designed to engage a broad array of diverse student populations
  • Experience effectively advising students and/or young adult leaders of programs, clubs or organizations to support personal and professional development as well as leadership in decision-making
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with and support a diverse student body and staff as well as possess a strong commitment to creating an inclusive environment for staff and students, the delivery of programs that support the diversity objectives of the campus community, and the development of cultural competency skills
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising personnel
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, with an ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic work environment that requires flexible hours
  • Demonstrated experience communicating effectively and professionally, including written, interpersonal, and public speaking skills related to group facilitation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration, Education, Management, Psychology, Ethnic Studies, LGBTQ studies, Womxn Studies, or another field of study that supports the work assigned
  • Experience supervising student employees and working with student volunteers
  • Demonstrated experience planning, forecasting, monitoring, managing and reconciling budgets in a higher education environment
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a comprehensive assessment plan that evaluates and analyzes the effectiveness of programs
  • Knowledge of student leadership and student development theories and their applications in practice\
  • One or more years of professional work experience in an organization, or on a program, specifically designed to meet the needs of an underserved, underrepresented, and/or marginalized population
Salary $47,148 - $52,387 depending on qualifications and experience
