||Woodring College of Education invites individuals with cross-cultural experience and commitment to social justice and educational equity to apply for appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Early Childhood Education Program (ECE) in the Elementary Education Department. This is a search for multiple ECE tenure track faculty for nine-month positions to begin fall 2019, with opportunity for summer employment. |About the Position
This is an exciting opportunity to adapt a National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Nationally Recognized ECE undergraduate program to meet the community needs of an underserved area of Kitsap County, Washington. Many sovereign tribal nations and a US Navy base are located in the communities served by this new ECE partnership program between WWU and Olympic College. The ECE program will offer day, evening and hybrid courses and field experiences in Bremerton and Poulsbo, Washington; located adjacent to the Suquamish Tribal Nation. The successful candidates will teach, mentor and advise students in core courses in the Early Childhood and Elementary Education Program for undergraduate students preparing to be teachers. Candidates will have both theoretical and practical experience in typical and atypical development of young children in the context of their families, cultures and communities. Candidates will have demonstrated experience, applied scholarship, research and course responsibilities with consideration given to scholars with experience in Indigenous education, in at least one of the following three broad ECE areas:
- Prenatal to age three children and families and early childhood special education with emphasis on inclusive, reflective, culturally sustaining and relationship-based contexts;
- Early childhood inquiry based pedagogy, early environments, play and creativity and
- Preschool to third grade, early elementary contexts with an emphasis on language, literacy and dual language acquisition, interdisciplinary instruction, and holistic development for young children.
All candidates will be knowledgeable and demonstrate understanding of the needs and multiple, interacting influences on children’s development and learning in relation to curriculum, assessment techniques, and instructional approaches for young children. Each of the successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate education in the field of early childhood studies in areas such as Indigenous education and decolonizing theories, early childhood pedagogy, and diverse communities and contexts.
- Advise and recruit undergraduate ECE students in partnership with other ECE faculty and local program partners and sovereign tribal nations,
- Supervise students in community-based, sovereign tribal nation, and/or school-based practica settings.
- Earned doctorate or ABD by time of appointment in Early Childhood Education. ABD candidates must have doctorate awarded by June 15, 2020.
- Scholarly record or demonstrated scholarly potential sufficient to warrant appointment at the tenure-track assistant professor rank.
- Expertise, coursework, demonstrated record of skills and knowledge of culturally and developmentally relevant practices appropriate for prenatal to grade three settings, with emphasis in one of the three areas identified in this position announcement.
- Demonstrate understanding of the needs and multiple, interacting influences on children’s development and learning in relation to curriculum, assessment techniques, and instructional approaches for young children.
- Demonstrated experience and abilities working in prenatal to grade three and higher education settings with diverse students, staff, and constituents, particularly those from historically marginalized communities.
- Record of ability to foster community relationships and engage in learning collaboratively with students, families, community partners and colleagues.
- Teaching and scholarship emphasis in one or more of the following areas: Indigenous education and decolonizing theories, early childhood inquiry based pedagogy (which may include early science/mathematics), land-based education, and partnerships with diverse communities and contexts.
- Teaching, experience and scholarship emphasis in Early Childhood Special Education.
- Demonstrated experience in successful teaching in higher education settings which include face to face, hybrid and online educational options.
- The ability to communicate fluently in two or more languages.
- A demonstrated record of scholarly research, including grant-funded research, in the area of Early Childhood Education or closely related field.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and partnership skills in developing responsive, inclusive programs with underrepresented and low income families/schools/communities.
- Leadership and demonstrated impact in innovative school/community/sovereign tribal nation and university partnerships.
