About the University

The Department of Political Science has 15 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty members and approximately 350 majors and minors.  Our work bridges American and comparative politics, international relations, public policy, and political theory.  We bring a cross-cultural and intersectional knowledge to bear on our course offerings and have a history of and a pedagogical commitment to integrating considerations of race, gender, and sexuality into all aspects of our curriculum.  The Department strives to further Western's identity as an institution that welcomes and embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion, and encourages applications from diverse candidates.

Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic in the state and Western's Latinx student population (comprising 8.8% of the total student population) has grown by 75% since 2013 and nearly 20% since 2015. Western has a wide variety of interdisciplinary programs focused on the various aspects of Latinx studies - such as the American Cultural Studies program, the Border Policy Research Institute, the Latin American Studies program, and the Education and Social Justice minor.

About the Position

The Political Science Department at Western Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track position in American Politics with a focus on Latinx Politics. The position is open to all areas of teaching and research within Latinx Politics. Position starts at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in September 2019.

The position requires undergraduate teaching; an active research program; and service to the Political Science department, the university, and the profession.  Teaching will include existing and new introductory and upper division courses in Latinx and other areas of American Politics and advanced courses in the candidate's area of specialization.  Tenure-track and tenured faculty teach two courses per term.  Criteria for promotion are described in the Political Science Department Unit Evaluation Plan, available on request. 

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate or ABD in Political Science or related field with expected completion by June 15, 2019.
  • Specialization in Latinx Politics.
  • Ability to teach introductory and upper division courses in Latinx and other areas of American Politics.
  • Ability to develop and sustain high quality research program.
  • Ability to work effectively within a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.

  • Ability and commitment to cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds.
  • Record of supporting the success of traditionally underrepresented students.
