About the Position

As our Part-Time Intramural Coordinator you will be responsible for providing advisement and professional expertise to a comprehensive Intramural Program within the department of Campus Recreation Services.  You will provide advising and leadership for a broad range of recognized student employees, in order to provide quality programs and enhance campus community, student leadership development, and the educational value of the student involvement experience.  Advising broadly includes counseling, education, and leading both individual students and groups of students.  We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate a commitment to serving Western's increasingly diverse student population.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing general advising and leadership to student groups involved in Intramurals to insure a quality experience for participating members
    • Provide specific advisement in areas such as program planning and management, scheduling, special event planning, budgeting, recruiting and retaining program participants, campus and community resources, program policies and procedures, publicity, program development  and enhancement of areas specific to the campus community's needs for intramural programming
    • Formulate intramural league schedules and trainings
    • Teach/train student officials and program supervisors the rules and mechanics of the sports for which they are in charge
    • Formulate outreach and promotion efforts to encourage program participation in intramural and related student activities
  • Actively managing the Intramural Program by maintaining an awareness of programming trends and other information that may impact Campus Recreation intramural programming
    • Assure a safe experience for employees, volunteers, and program participants through an active program of risk analysis and management
    • Actively represent the intramural program needs of the campus community to the department and maintain an awareness of emerging and ongoing issues across the industry
    • Provide education and training to ensure compliance with student employment policies and guidelines of Campus Recreation Services and Western Washington University
    • Develop and maintain a campus wide outreach plan to attract academic majors for recruiting, mentoring, coaching and involving student staff with the national organization
  • Hiring, directing, coaching, mentoring and teaching officials, supervisors, and support staff
    • Enhance student employee training and development by providing individual training and consultation on program specific needs and group training on topics of pertinence to all intramural program staff
    • Assist with Intramural program payroll and equipment budgets
  • Providing opportunities for students to develop and enhance their leadership skills by developing resources and programs to further the leadership development and effectiveness of student employees and students involved in intramural programs
    • Teach student employees to organize and evaluate all intramural program equipment and supplies for participant stafety
  • Building working relationships with other campus departments/colleagues related to program objectives or needs
  • Serving on departmental, divisional and University committees
  • Performing other duties as assigned
  • Working early morning, weekend, and evening hours as necessary as many organization meetings and events occur during these times

This is a part-time position which works approximately 19 - 25 hours per week.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • One year of professional administrative experience in recreation and/or athletics in higher education or a Master's Degree in Recreation Management or a closely related field and Graduate Assistant experience in Intramurals, Athletics, or Recreation Programming
  • Experience working with Intramural software, managing the registration process, and marketing for programs
  • Personnel management experience, including training officials and office management staff
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of budget development and management
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with students of diverse identities and backgrounds
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of and experience in planning, advising, and coordinating intramurals 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Recreation Management, Student Personnel Administration, PEHR, or a closely related field
  • Knowledge of student leadership and student development theory and their applications in practice
  • Knowledge of and experience in developing and presenting training programs for student leaders and/or employees, specifically intramural officials
  • American Red Cross First Aid Instructor Certified
  • Experience with the IM Leagues website for managing of intramural leagues
  • Participation in Intramural Leagues as an undergraduate or graduate student
