This position provides analysis, design, programming, maintenance and technical support for applications and web-based applications.  Development work includes automating staff workflows and improving the efficiency of business processes for the Viking Union Organization and the Associated Students of Western Washington University as well as providing some level of development support for the Dean of Students Administrative Unit. 

About the Position

This is a highly technical, programming-heavy position, with project management, student developer supervision, server and database administration responsibilities.  It requires extensive experience with application development and integration, content management systems, web architecture, database design for web applications and systems administration.

As our Lead Software Developer you will serve as the lead developer and architect on all software development projects for the organization.  You will lead a team of 3-5 student employees, with an emphasis on providing an educational opportunity for the student employees to learn professional software design, development and deployment practices.

You will engage in professional development opportunities to support the development of competence and effectiveness in the areas of inclusion, diversity, multicultural and cross-cultural proficiency, and other related topics.

You will be in support of:

  • An inclusive environment for staff and students
  • Development of cultural competency skills
  • The delivery of programs that support the diversity objective of the campus community

The State HR classification for this position is IT Specialist 3.

 

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in any subject plus three years of work experience writing applications with one or more high-level programming languages
  • Two years of experience designing and administering relational databases
  • One year of experience developing in a Web Applications Framework, such as Django or Ruby on Rails
  • Experience in front-end development (UI/UX) technologies, including HTML, CSS, AJAX and JavaScript
  • Experience with version control systems, such as Git or SubVersion
  • Familiarity with agile development methodology (Scrum, Kanban, XP, etc.)
  • Experience configuring and maintaining Linux/Unix database and web servers
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Experience working in an education setting
  • Demonstrable customer service skills
  • Experience developing applications in Python
  • Experience developing sites with Drupal
  • Experience implementing principles of Test Driven Development
  • Experience designing and/or maintaining a Continuous Integration Environment
  • Familiarity with Web Design principles, including accessibility standards and responsive design
  • Five years of experience working in a technology related field
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Math or technology related field
  • Demonstrated experience effectively supervising personnel, including hiring, scheduling, directing work, reviewing performance, or coaching
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas:
    • Customer Support - Supporting or training users in the use of Microsoft Office or third party web applications
    • User Account Management - Managing user accounts and permissions to various IT applications, services or file systems
    • Hardware and Software Support - Troubleshooting computer hardware or software and creating and deploying computer images
    • Network Support - Designing, planning, or implementing computer networks; knowledge or experience with network concepts including TCP/IP, DNS, LAN/WAN and DHCP troubleshooting
Salary New hires typically begin at $4399/month, including an excellent benefits package
Bargaining Unit This position is part of a Public School Employees of WWU bargaining union.  New employees are required to meet the membership requirements of the current collective bargaining agreement within 30 calendar days of employment.
