About the Department

The WWU Counseling Center provides students with short-term individual, couples, and group counseling, as well as workshops, outreach programs and consultations to the Western community.  Our counseling staff includes a collaborative team of 10+ FTE of psychologists and licensed mental health counselors, case manager and men’s resiliency positions.  We have four doctoral intern positions, and two full-time support staff.   We work closely with the Student Health Center and Health Promotions to provide coordinated services for students.  We seek excellence through diversity and inclusion. WWU’s Counseling Center is accredited by the International Association for Counseling Services, and an APPIC-member site for doctoral interns.

About the Position

The WWU Counseling Center is seeking to fill a permanent, full-time, 12-month Men’s Resiliency position. 

As our Men's Resiliency Specialist you will manage and direct the administration of the day-to-day operations of the Men's Resiliency program in coordination and consultation with the Men's Resiliency Advisory Council.  Men’s Resiliency Advisory Council is an interdepartmental work group comprised of students, staff, and faculty tasked with identifying and addressing the needs of male-identified students at WWU.

Position Responsibilities:

Educational Counseling and Mentoring:

  • Provide educational counseling and mentorship to/regarding male-identified students that enhances their lived student experiences while at Western.
  • Education and outreach to/regarding male – identified students about services available on campus.
  • Create non-stigmatized mechanisms of support, engagement, and community development.
  • Educate professional and student staff on the impact of male socialization, communication of distress and help-seeking behavior.
  • Provide specific advisement in areas such as retention, identity development, accessing campus and community resources, and university policies/procedures.

    Public Relations:

  • Facilitate outreach presentations and training for the campus community.
  • Public relations may include communication through social networking sites, website updates, promotional documents/products, and brochure/newsletter distribution. 
  • Recommend graphics, layout and information for culturally informative newsletters.
  • Use traditional and social media platforms to expand upstream prevention awareness and activism to create a culture of caring for all students across all cultural demographic groups on campus.

    Campus Liaison/Representative:

  • Actively represent the Men's Resiliency program and Counseling Center within the Enrollment and Student Services Division, campus, and local communities.
  • Participate in a variety of meetings, committees, or other related groups to communicate information regarding services, programs, areas of opportunity, and other pertinent information related to male-identified/multicultural initiatives.
  • Successfully work with a wide variety of constituents in the division to address male-identified issues on campus.
  • Serve as liaison within the division by providing information on available resources and services.

    Supervision and Operations Management:

  • Lead the development of the program's strategic planning process; define quarter and annual goals and priorities.
  • Manage the operations of the specific programs, services and events designed to enhance the student lived experience for/regarding male-identified students.
  • Supervise all student employees, interns, volunteers, and graduate and research assistants.
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate student employees. Ensure student employees are aware and in compliance with all personnel/departmental policies and procedures.

    Diversity/Cultural Competency:

  • Create and facilitate professional development opportunities for the campus community to improve competence and effectiveness in the areas of inclusion, diversity, multicultural and cross-cultural proficiency related to male-identified issues.
  • Engage in and promote professional development opportunities to support the development of competence and effectiveness in the areas of inclusion, diversity, multicultural and cross-cultural proficiency related to male-identified issues.

    Assessment:

  • Provide data and assessment reports as needed that highlight accomplishments and challenges that the Men's Resiliency program may or may not experience.

     

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field; such as Health Promotion, Health Education, Public Health, Sociology, a form of Cultural Studies, Gender & Sexual Identity Studies, Human Services/Social Work, Equity & Diversity, Student Affairs/Higher Education Administration, or related field.
  • Experience in developing educational, cultural, and social programs designed to improve the quality of the student experience of/regarding male-identified college students.
  • Ability to work successfully with a diverse student body and staff, with a strong commitment to creating an inclusive environment for staff and students.
  • Two or more years of professional experience related to education programming.
  • Two or more years of professional experience in planning, advising, and coordinating events and activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and written communication skills.       
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize deadlines and balance multiple responsibilities simultaneously in an organized and detail oriented manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, early mornings and weekends, especially in the summer.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years of professional experience related to prevention efforts.
  • Two or more years of professional experience in a capacity designed to meet the needs of an underserved, underrepresented, and/or marginalized population.
  • Experience working with and supervising college-aged individuals in a university setting.
  • Experience and competence with computers and applicable software; including MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), Internet Browser; Web Content Management, MS Publisher or Adobe Acrobat; Adobe Creative Suite.
Salary Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
