About the Department

Academic Technology and User Services (ATUS) is the face of information technology at Western providing desktop and networked services as well as support for teaching and learning.  Our Teaching, Learning and Technology offices support faculty and students with classroom media, specialized labs and media spaces, laptop and AV loan, support for the Learning Management System, and faculty development opportunities.  We pride ourselves in our excellent customer support and considerate stewardship of university resources.

About the Position

As our Classroom AV Specialist, you will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the University's classroom audiovisual equipment and computer systems used by faculty, staff, and students in all general-use classrooms, television studios, and computer labs.

In this role, you would be the primary point of contact for emergency calls for technical support in these classrooms and labs.  Working with other University audiovisual support staff, you would also provide technical expertise to support special events and videoconferencing needs.  You will also be responsible for managing the AV Equipment Loan, coordinating student workers, checking out equipment and handling inventory.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Installing, upgrading, and maintaining the functionality of general-university classroom, television studio, and lab AV equipment and computers
  • Providing emergency classroom and lab technical support
  • Handling the inventory, maintenance, and checkout of portable media equipment
  • Supporting the technical requirements of university special events that require media equipment (such as laptop computers, webcams, microphones, speakers, podia, projectors, and screens)
  • Assisting in the decision-making for acquisition of new systems for instructional support
The State HR classification for this position is Information Technology Specialist 2.
Required Qualifications
  • Four or more years of experience supporting audiovisual and multimedia systems (such as video projectors, switching/controlling systems, microphones, and document cameras)
  • Associates degree (or higher) in a technology-related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting higher education classrooms and/or television studios
  • At least one year of experience configuring and troubleshooting modern audiovisual control systems (such as Extron, AMX, or Crestron)
  • Society of Broadcast Engineers certification (Certified Broadcast Technologist, Certified Video Engineer, Certified Broadcast Television Engineer) or evidence of substantial experience in broadcast and/or television studio maintenance
  • Experience working effectively with diverse students and colleagues
Salary New hires typically begin at $3985/month including an excellent benefits package
Bargaining Unit This position is part of a Public School Employees of WWU bargaining union.  New employees are required to meet the membership requirements of the current collective bargaining agreement within 30 calendar days of employment.
