About the Position

As one of our Electricians you will be expected to work in an independent manner as a fully qualified electrician and within small teams, and will perform skilled installation, maintenance, and repair work on low voltage electrical equipment and systems of 750 volts or less.  During shutdowns and maintenance, you will be required to assist with high voltage electrical equipment and systems of 12,400 volts or less.  

You will take direction from the shop lead and supervisor and are expected to relate well with a variety of people, including students, faculty and staff.  You will perform electrical functions to include maintaining and renovating the university facilities.


If this position is listed as essential personnel; you must report to work during suspended operations.

This position may perform tasks requiring the use of a respirator; you will be required to pass a fit test, which includes needing to be clean shaven.

Prior to a new hire, a fingerprint background check including a criminal history will be conducted.  Information about the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining your suitability and competence to perform in the position.

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience reading and interpreting blueprints (detail sketches), plans, and building specifications in order to determine where wiring is and/or needs to be installed
  • Ability to produce detailed sketches and specifications
  • Demonstrated experience working in sensitive situations such as: operational offices, classrooms, dorm rooms, restrooms, etc.
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Valid EL01 Washington State Electrical License
  • One year of related experience in a commercial or institutional setting
  • Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to starting work in order to drive a state-owned vehicle for travel to work locations
  • Possess a strong knowledge of applicable electrical codes and regulations such as: Washington Administrative Code (WAC) regulations and local building, mechanical and NEC electrical codes
  • Physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to perform daily work tasks independently under limited supervision
  • Possess technical accuracy and recordkeeping skills
  • Ability to work with computer hardware and software required to track work orders and record time worked
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a friendly and cooperative manner with students, staff, and faculty at all levels of the organization and in contacts with the public
  • Ability to manage time well and work under pressure situations with tight schedules and deadlines to complete projects
  • Effective read and understand written information and instructions 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to perform accurate material take-off, help with estimating projects, and assist in field design work (shop drawings)

  • Meet schedules and deadlines while staying within the estimated costs
  • Possess strong communication skills including written and verbal
  • Possess a strong knowledge of Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA), Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) rules and regulations, standard job safety rules, and proper use of a face respirator
  • Possess a good working knowledge of or formal training in several related skill fields including plumbing, sheet metal, welding, pipe fitting, pipe insulating, hazard material (asbestos abatement), building controls, signage, and painting obtained in and institutional, commercial, or industrial environment
Salary New hires typically begin at $4,292/month including an excellent benefits package
Bargaining Unit This position is covered by a Washington Federation of State Employees bargaining union.  New employees are required to meet the membership requirements of the current collective bargaining agreement within 30 calendar days of employment.
